What is alkaline water?

Although there is not enough research on the subject yet, here is what we know. Alkaline water has a higher pH level than normal water. It’s supposed to fight the acid that forms in the body and do some sort of a cleanse. At the moment, there are studies underway to determine the benefit of alkaline water in aiding heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer. This water is negatively charged so it balances out with the free radical oxygen in our body, which is the number one reason for aging and growth of cancer. Alkaline water is actually found bottled water that you can buy from any store, or you can purchase an alkaline water filter and regulate the tap water in your own home. In my opinion, the latter is the better choice, so let’s review why.

Why use an alkaline water filter instead of bottled water?

    1.Convenient and always available

Nowadays, most of us lead pretty busy lives, juggling work, family, and friends, and of course a little time for yourself and your hobbies now and then. Who has the extra time to continuously restock bottled water in their home? It’s a lot less convenient to have a built-in water filter that changes the pH level in the tap water and produces alkaline water 24/7. It’s not just the time wasted going to the store constantly, but also the gas and the money wasted in the process, which brings us to the next reason to look into home water filters.

     2.Cheaper

With all the money spent on food, clothes, vacations, etc., do we really need to pay for water when you have free tap water at your disposal whenever you want? We both know the answer to this one. Buying a water filter is a bit of an investment at the beginning, but in the long run, it actually pays for itself because you will probably save a lot of money not buying gallons and gallons of bottled water.

To get a better idea of what I’m saying, one bottle of alkaline water is around $10 USD and a six-pack ranging around $20-$40 USD! That’s insane! Isn’t it better to make a bigger one-time investment in a water filter that you can use for years later?

     3.Cleaner

Another big reason to look into self-producing alkaline water is the fact that it is most likely cleaner than the bottles we buy from stores. Why?

Plastic bottles can be toxic to us if we use them for too long because the plastic itself releases molecules in the water. Scary, isn’t it? Also, while being produced at a factory, there is always a possibility of the water becoming contaminated with foreign chemicals. And last, but not least, the world is fighting a never-ending problem called pollution. We all know about the millions of plastic bottles that don’t get recycled and get dumped in oceans. So why add more?

How does an alkaline water filter work?

Alkaline water filtration systems use multiple filters to remove contaminants from your tap water by increasing the pH level and alkalinity of water using unique techniques. It provides more oxygen-rich water which our body can absorb quicker.

The first things to be removed with the filter are sand and dirt, followed by carbon filters which remove chemicals, chlorine, and other harmful metals. If your chosen filtration system is a little more advanced, it can even remove copper, zinc, viruses, and bacteria.

For water to be classified as alkaline water, the pH level should be over 7.

You can easily recognize the quality of your tap water because low pH water contains acid and has a specific taste that signals the presence of harmful metals. The alkaline water filters contain specifically designed materials that remove the unwanted chemicals from tap water and at the same time add magnesium and potassium to increase the overall quality.

Types of alkaline filters

Before you make an investment, you need to be informed about the types of water treatment machines that are available on the market. Firstly, there are water filters and water ionizers. What is the difference?

Ionizers work with electrolysis ( they use electricity) to change the pH balance of the water. In water filters, the water runs through mineral filters ( doesn’t use electricity). Now, let’s review the types of filters.

Whole-house filters

As the name suggests, these filters are designed to filter the water in your whole house. They are very big and expensive and need professionals to install them. These water filters are attached to the plumbing in your home.

Countertop filters

As opposed to the whole-house filters, these are very easy to use and install. There are two types:

  • Linked directly to the sink
  • Sit independently on the countertop ( this variant takes up more space and filters a lot less water than the first one)

Pitchers

Water pitchers are essentially a container with a top lid and removable filters. These are a great choice if you are always on the go and have a limited budget.

Under-the-counter filters

These filters are limited to a specific water source in the home ( e.g. kitchen, bathroom ) and are much cheaper and easier to install than the whole-house units.

What to Consider Before Buying

Before investing in a water filter, it’s important to consider a few things so you find the perfect product for your household.

Installation

It’s important to understand that some water filter systems are extremely difficult to install by yourself, even impossible. That means you are going to require professional help which equals additional costs. If you don’t have the knowledge yourself and don’t want to invest extra money in installation, it’s better to consider buying a more simple water filter.

Another thing about the installation process that you need to be aware of is the way that different water filters connect to a household. For example, an under-the-counter water filter uses the water line connected to the sink, so you will need to install the whole system.

A countertop filter, on the other hand, needs to connect to the water line and also to the power. Most of these water systems can be installed on your own, but in any case, it’s important to be informed before purchasing.

Budget and Maintenance

One of the most important criteria when buying a water filter is to define the budget. This is a long-term commitment that is probably going to cost a small fortune to install and maintain. The whole-house systems are very durable and require less maintenance, but the initial investment is significantly high. On the other hand, small countertop water filters or pitchers are a lot less expensive, but also have less durable filters that need to be exchanged more often, so the maintenance cost is big.

Benefits

As I said before, alkaline water has a higher pH level than normal tap water, and it comes with a lot of benefits. Let’s look at some of them:

1.Improves oxygen distribution through the body

Water with a higher pH level improves blood flow, which makes oxygen distribution more efficient.

2.Reduces acid reflux

Higher pH levels in water can help fight enzymes that cause acid reflux in our body.

3.Bosts energy

Because it improves blood flow and oxygen distribution, it automatically increases your energy level.

Flow Rate

Most alkaline water systems slightly reduce the flow rate of water in the household. The speed of water delivery relies on the number of plates that the system is equipped with. More plates equal faster water delivery. If you need your flow rate to be high, you can research specific water systems ( usually not the ones that work with electrolysis).

Warranty

Warranty is extremely important when buying a long-lasting and expensive product. But because most of these systems are made to last for years, they have a warranty to support that claim. The majority of them have a warranty for a minimum of 5 years, some even longer.

Reviews

Last but not least, read the reviews online. Feedback and rating from customers are a sure way to know if you are buying a quality product. There are a lot of testimonials, both good and bad so that you know what to expect and how to handle potential issues that can occur in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drink alkaline water every day?

Yes! Alkaline water is completely safe to be consumed daily. Although research still hasn’t proved it officially, alkaline water has a great number of benefits for your overall health. There are still no consequences to drinking alkaline water every day, so you’re safe.

Is alkaline water good for kidneys?

As mentioned before, research is still thin, so there are actually no pros and cons on the effect of alkaline water on kidneys. If you’re not sure, it’s best to consult your doctor before deciding to use alkaline water.

What are the most trusted alkaline water filter brands?

A few of the most reputable brands in alkaline water filters are Apex and Express Water, along with the rest that we reviewed earlier. If you do your research, these brands are the most rated by satisfied customers. That doesn’t mean that the other brands are not as good or that they won’t suit your needs better.

How to care for & clean?

Every water filter system you buy comes with its own manual with detailed cleaning and maintenance instructions. Once you buy it, read the manual carefully so you care and clean it correctly and ensure a long-lasting product.

The Best Alkaline Water Filters: Conclusion

With all the information given above, by now you should have an idea of what suits you best. You already know what the water filters do, how they do it, and what it takes to have them up and running. Weigh in all your options and cross-reference every feature before you make your final choice.

In my opinion, the best option is a whole-house water filtration system, because it provides you with better water throughout your household, and not only for drinking but also cooking, cleaning and washing clothes and dishes. It’s also the most durable option of them all, with the least maintenance, so it will not take away from your busy lifestyle.

If you still would like to have an on-the-go water filter, you could purchase a pitcher later on and be fully equipped in every moment of your life.
